I was fortunate to receive training in the fall of 2010 from Self Defense Solutions (SDS) in their Women’s Defense and Awareness and Basic Firearms Training courses; I was 52 at the time. Classroom instruction was comprehensive and reinforced with handouts for later review. Live fire sessions were conducted with excellent instruction on firing line and live fire safety. Live fire drills were designed to familiarize the shooter with “real life” scenarios, making training apply directly to everyday situations. Their communication style was clear and concise. Mr. Bucy and his staff were friendly, prepared, accommodating, adaptable, approachable, and above all, professional. I have absolutely no hesitation recommending SDS to anyone. I met Mr. Bucy more than ten years ago. I was very impressed with his ability to break down complex pistol shooting tasks, and teach them to novice shooters in such a way that they were easily understood. He has an excellent grasp for tactical firearm handling, and is able to impart that knowledge and skill to his students with great success.
Mr. Bucy also has the ability to relate those tasks to everyday home and self defense through situational training. His scenario based range exercises are challenging, encouraging the student to think about the situation, and quickly react to the threat. Above all, they are realistic. The skills learned are applicable to anyone who owns, or carries a firearm, whether they are the average homeowner who wants the skill to defend themselves and their family, or the soldier in combat.
I highly recommend Self Defense Solutions to the firearms novice, as well as the more advanced shooter who wants to hone their skill.

My husband and I took the two day Basic Handgun and Personal Defense Combination course. It was very informative but fun at the same time. I went from never having shot a gun before to feeling comfortable handling a gun and shooting with decent accuracy. I loved that they were willing to slightly personalize the class to my personal needs it wasn’t just a generic “every class is the exact same for everybody” kind of lesson but is actually based on what you want to get out of the class. Thank you for having such a wonderful and informative class!!!

Basic Handgun and Personal Defense Combination course
For anyone searching for a, professional Handgun, Firearms training, Personal Defense, CCW (concealed carry weapon) Tactical Shooting, and/or Hand to Hand combat class in Huntsville, or northern Alabama, Cameron Bucy of Self Defense Solutions (SDS) offers an outstanding and complete selection of courses.
I have been a gun owner and target shooter for almost 30 years, and recently decided to start concealed carry. I wanted to take some classes and began a search for qualified instructor, and boy did I hit the mother load!!! I just completed the SDS Basic Handgun and Personal Defense combo course. Don’t let the title fool you, the SDS course outline is not going to waste your time going over information you already know, SDS adjust the training based on your knowledge and experience. Mr. Bucy is the director of SDS, and he teaches every course, no substitute instructors. He does have range officers that assist him depending on class size, but he does not hold large classes (the average class size is 4 students). He wants to utilize your time with him, and does not teach a generic course. He personalizes the class to fit your needs and skill level. So, from the beginner, to the more advanced shooter, your individual training needs are addressed and satisfied beyond your expectations.
The Combo course I took consisted of 3 sessions, each lasting about 2 to 3 hours long. It’s usually taught in this order; Classroom session, Range session, follow-up Classroom session. This allows you to absorb what you learn before moving onto the next step. He utilizes outdoor ranges, and you will do a lot of stress fire drills; he also utilizes 3D targets that will move toward you and away. You learn quick draw, sight shooting, point shooting, weak hand shooting, shooting to the side and rear, concealed shooting, speed re-loading, and proper mindset and decision making skills. He teaches the Skills, Responsibilities and Psychology of Armed Self-Defense and most importantly (to me) Safety was his top priority, and I never felt unsafe, afraid, or overwhelmed. I could go on for another several pages, but just know that this was an enjoyable, informative and entertaining class. The class was filled with useful information beginning to end, and no time was wasted. Well worth the money! I cannot wait to take the next course!
Speaking of courses…SDS offers almost everything could want. And if you don’t see what you want to learn, ask Mr. Bucy and he can probably design a course to meet your needs. He also conducts “Active Shooter” training courses and seminars on a regular basis, to keep your skills sharp after you take his courses, He also teaches a combative hands course, which is based on Krav Maga, this course is a great compliment to CCW. This is truly an all around excellent program and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Other things to mention…Mr. Bucy is an Executive Protection Agent. Executive Protection Agents train to the same standards as the FBI and Secret Service. He has trained at the best organizations within this field. He incorporates many Executive Protection concepts into his courses. You will learn things you didn’t even know, you didn’t know. He has been providing professional personal protection training and education to civilians and law enforcement for over 20 years. As you might expect, he is very intelligent and his class is interesting and well paced. He knows his subject back and forth and is able to communicate exceptionally well. The presentation was thorough and exciting! It was interesting, engaging at all times, and I was fascinated. You will be thinking about his classes, days after they are finished. Simply put you can spend your money for a larger class and get less attention, or spend your money here and get the individualized attention you desire. It was an amazing 9 hours! I would take the class again! No one asked me to write this review, but I was so blown away by what I got at SDS, I wanted to pass it on to anyone (like me) who was looking for a reputable, personalized handgun class in the Huntsville, Alabama area. I’m so glad I found them!!!
