This is not a basic course. Students should currently possess a high level of familiarity and confidence in their handgun and gear. Students will be required to manipulate their handgun from unconventional positions including laying on the ground and from a seated position.
Students should dress in comfortable clothing and be in good physical condition. (Shorts are not recommended)
Activities will include:
- Firing from contact distances
- Unconventional shooting positions and shot placement
- Reloading and malfunction correction
- Target discrimination
- Shooting while moving, shooting at moving targets
- Shooting from a patrol vehicle
Equipment:
- Duty handgun
- Minimum of three magazines
- Minimum of 300 rounds of ammunition
- Complete duty belt
- Concealable body armor
- Eye and ear protection
- Ball cap
- Bottled water (Sodas and sports drinks are discouraged)
This is a Law Enforcement only class. Security personnel and qualified civilians should contact the director for a waiver or information on qualifying for this course.

Mr. Shannon Thrasher (Instructor)
Mr. Thrasher is a combat veteran of the U.S. Army’s 1st Special Operations Command where he participated in Operation Just Cause, and Operation Desert Storm among others. In 1992 he returned to his home state of California to begin his career in contract security and law enforcement while continuing to serve our country in the National Guard, as well as working as an Executive Protection agent in the private security sector.
Mr. Thrasher moved to Alabama in 2002 to advance his career with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff, and continue operations as a Personal Protection Specialist (P.P.S.) providing close personal protection to VIP’s, CEO’s and at-risk clients.
Mr. Thrasher holds qualifications as a Tactical Operator, Tactical Medic, Police Sniper, Personal Protection Specialist, and is a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (E.M.T.). As an F.B.I. Certified Firearms Instructor for handgun, shotgun, sub machine gun, and patrol rifle, he brings 20 plus years of real-world, practical experience to the law enforcement officers and students he instructs.
